Call for Panel Members
We are currently recruiting new panel members to join our Independent Research Ethics Committee (IREC).
Over the past 18 months, IREC has developed into a fully independent and well-established service, offering ‘nose-to-tail’ ethical review. This means we consider all aspects of a project, from initial design through to dissemination, with an emphasis on thoughtful, proportionate review processes that minimise bureaucracy while maintaining high ethical standards. As demand for our work continues to grow, we are expanding our panel.
Panel membership is offered on a paid, freelance basis. While we cannot guarantee a specific volume of work, we are currently experiencing high demand for reviews.
We welcome applications from people with a wide range of ethics expertise. Our definition of expertise is intentionally broad: you do not need to have formal experience on a research ethics committee, an academic background, or specific qualifications in ethics. Instead, we are looking for individuals who can demonstrate thoughtful, reflective engagement with ethical issues and a commitment to working within our seven core principles:
- Intersectionality
- Justice
- Dignity
- Respect
- Fairness
- Honesty
- Care
We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive panel. At present, some groups are over-represented in our applicant pool, and we would particularly welcome applications from:
- Men, trans and non-binary people
- Quantitative researchers
- People of colour
- People with lived experience of intersectionality
- Younger and older applicants
You do not need to be based in the UK, although you must be able to participate in online meetings. Our current panel members are primarily based in Europe.
the application process is straightforward. We ask for:
- A statement of up to 500 words outlining your relevant experience and approach to ethics
- The details of two referees who can confirm the claims made in your statement
If you would like to discuss the role informally before applying, please contact us via the email address on our website and we will be happy to arrange a brief conversation.
